Our Roots go Way Back

MBS Residence originally began in 1968 when, wanting more than institutional life for their children, a group of parents opened four residential area homes. Founding member Helen Steinkopf was also concerned that many seniors with disabilities were institutionalized.

Even those individuals who were cared for by family ended their senior years in institution.

Helen was especially concerned about continuity of care.  Individuals with intellectual disabilities needed services while still with their families,

then more as young adults with growing independence and again at the time of their senior years, when their needs became greater.

The four homes opened by a group of concerned parents were passed to a newly established agency.

In 1986, MBS Residence  re-organized with a new Board of Directors.  MBS Residence was privileged to participate in the Welcome Home Program.

The MBS Outreach Program, with a goal of reaching isolated individuals in the community, began in 1988.

The Seniors Club, a specifically targeted day program, was initiated in 1992.

Today, MBS Residence offers a variety of programs designed to fulfil personal requirements at every stage.
